Is there a book? I would like to send my son one as he is incarcerated and he has learned to crochet. How wonderful that your son has learned how to crochet. I usually prefer people to share the links to my patterns instead of printing them, but please feel free to print this page to give to him if that would be helpful. I think my heart would swell if someone sent me that!!!! My ma is my favorite person to torture with my projects!! Nat, that sounds like a really wonderful idea, but in the Texas Criminal Justice system, this would not be allowed.
Any publications have to be shipped directly from a book store. I imagine this is the same with all prison systems. They do it all the time. Good luck, and happy crocheting. I am trying that. What if you poked the holes straight down through the flip flop and then gorilla glued an extra sole to the bottom? They might be more sturdy and you could actually walk around outside with them…if you wanted to. Any chance you might do a YouTube video showing how to make these?!
I agree. I am having some trouble understanding the instructions. I would love to see the youtube video. When you say 3 stiches before the marker to you mean before as in towards the toe or towards the heel?? So you stop 3 stitches short of the marker, toward the heel.
This essentially creates a tapered edge so that the back heel section rises gradually. If you look at a few of the photos shot from the side, you might see what I mean.
As for how loose it is, you might want to try having fewer holes in your sole overall. For reference, my size 9 pair have 69 holes around each sole. I think using a smaller hook is a great idea too. Would a dab of super glue or hot glue in the holes help strengthen the flip flop?
I might give that a try! These are so cute!! Using most glues on the foam soles will only melt the soles, creating a bigger problem. Maybe rubber cement would work without melting the foam soles. Can you make a video on how to start the first row????? Do you make them for sale??? I have an Artery Disease that make my feet swell. And thank You for sharing!!! Hi Jess, I m having truble with the toe. What are you having trouble with specifically? After row 5 do I continue all the way around?
It says something about hdc in 3rd SC from hook, but I supposedly just fastened off. After row 5, yes you continue around in the same direction working around the entire ankle until you get back to where you started. The additional row 5 was a typo! I just did some updates on this pattern and forgot to delete that. Thanks so much for pointing it out! I have used craft glue, putting a drop in all the holes top and bottom. I am hoping that will help. I just made them but really want to make more.
Let us know how that works out, Cynthia. That is true. The foam is pretty sturdy. Thank you, Nancy. If you scroll through the comments, you can see a few people offering their services. I msde some similsr but used my own pattern after the foundation row.
I only had 1 hole break through, then just was more careful when pushinh hook through the sole. Mine turned out great! I even entered them into our County Fair and received a Blue Ribbon! You could always use a little glue in the holes to help hold them in place, and to fill the holes made when cutting away the straps. Aside from the flimsy sole- supposedly, I think they are fine for out side in the summer on a dry day…running errands…especially if made like moccasins!
Yes totally! I actually just shared a moccasin pattern in which I glued the little rubber circles from the straps back into the holes in the rubber soles. It worked great. Thank you for the pattern, I have made twelve now and will be making more Christmas gifts. If you have one extra set of flip flops, perhaps you could just cut small circles from the sole and use them to plug the holes on the other pairs? Hi Jess- I spent today preparing the flip flop soles and discovered something that works really well to mark the Kohls on the flip-flop soles.
I made a paper copy of the top of the flip-flops sole. Then I punched out each hole with a hole punch. I then put the paper copy on the top of the flip-flop sole and held it in place of a couple of straight pins.
It makes precise holes any circumference you would like and allows you to see very clearly where you are pushing through the top over onto the side of the sole. Hope these two tips help to make your project go faster. This is such a great idea, Andrea! Thank you for sharing! I might have to incorporate this idea into the next tutorial. And I had never heard of a bead reamer. I just had to look it up.
I can see how it would work perfectly for this. The pattern is above this comment area, within the article. Judy, the pattern is under the first pictures. Most articles on websites do this. Designer, I love this pattern and love HL store. Could someone send the pattern to my email? You could also run a bead of hot glue over the holes on the inside of the shoe after you are done crocheting.
It would strengthen that edge, I think. Great idea. On the flimsy flip flops I used an Awl and it is better to punch the hole straight through from top to bottom. I had already gone through the side and two out of the first four stitches tore. I was able to salvage the flip flops. The next pair I made were slightly heavier flip flops. I was making a size 10 slipper. None of the stitches are actually touching the floor. My first slipper I poked the holes bottom to top… Opps should of watched the video..
Haha—I can see how that could happen, Wanda. Are there any recommendations on the thickness or density for the sole? I was so excited to get started on these, but 3 of the first 4 stitches ripped right through. So disappointed! I am getting the hang of it. Second, keep the hook facing down as you pull the hook up through the sole. If the hook faces the side, it tears easily. Third, crochet loosely on this first row. Got mine made … But had trouble keeping them on..
Had to run some yarn in around the top to tighten them.. I also made a small pair and I got the second one upside down so then had two right feet… Mine are finished and I love them..
I forget what the stitch is called but loop the thread back through the previous stitch with every pass through the sole so that there is a continuous line of thread on both the top and bottom. Then start the pattern as written, using the wax thread as your foundation row. That would also make it better for outdoor wear. The free pattern is right above this comment area within the blog post. The paid printable pattern can be found here. I know! Mine too, Momma! I have some flip flops and yarn to make you some.
Can you please help? You can find all my other free crochet patterns right here! Thanks so much for your hawk eyes! Row 14 should be called row There is no row Thanks again for your proofreading! What a cute house shoe and fantastic summer pattern!! These are pretty darn cute for out of the house as well.
I need to wear an arch support insole around the house hardwood and baby chasing can destroy me before breakfast! Do you think these guys would? Any thoughts? Hope that makes sense! I wonder how it would work if you glued an insole onto the flip flop before putting in the holes and use them as a support for the flip flop to make a sturdier base as most have a cloth top. Love these slippers.
I have a couple of questions. Does this sound correct? Your stitches look to be more like a sl instead of a sc. Without looking at them, there are a few things that might contribute to a larger gauge.
Mine almost flattened a bit, and thus do look a little like a slip stitch. Does that make sense? Feel free to ask more questions if not! Hi there! I am only guessing, but I think maybe if you are able to do the 1st row, to get the yarn IN the foam, that you could then change to DP knitting needles and pick up stitches with the knitting needles, all the way around, continuing to knit until they are the size you want, following the same shaping, etc of the pattern for the heel and then picking up stitches at the top to do that too.
Adjust gauge to get what you want with whatever size needles you prefer to use. You may need 5 or 6 needles to get around the sole. If you are not able to do the 1st row with sc , if you know how to embroider, you could try using a blanket st around the sole to get the yarn started and continue with the pattern as above.
As I said, this is just a guess. I am not an expert, by any means, and I have not tried this yet as I just found the pattern, but my brain goes in different directions than it would be expected to, and I come up with some crazy ideas. Some work. Happy kn itting. Perhaps Anne Smith is using. And that is why her sides are so high.
Can you tell us what size hook and gauge yarn you used please? Also, a photo to show how you started in the back would be helpful. Thanks so much. As the first 9 rows are in the round, do the rows start getting smaller? Your photo makes them look like they cinch inward, closing in over the foot. Or do the rows go straight up? Are you in the UK by chance? If so, then your sc is actually our double and would be much taller as a consequence.
Am I missing it somewhere? I always need rubber soled slippers. Thank you. Thanks for sharing my patterns on Pinterest!
I hope you enjoy making your own pair, Gerry. Let me know if you have any questions. And feel free to send me a pic of the finished project!
Can you mail me a written pattern for those adorable slippers? Thank you so much. Hi could I get the pattern from you on how to make the flip flops. LOVE these! I have very hard to fit feet so If I could figure out how to make these I could finally have perfectly fitting house shoes. I think these would be darling and comfortable for us Red Hat Society sisters to wear.
Hi there Just wondering where can I get the pattern for these I would like to have a go at making them. Thank you Tracie. I LOVE these. I was wondering however there is a elderly lady in our church that makes crocheted dish cloths with dish towels with a matching crocheted end for hanging that she gives out for birthday gifts, anniversary gifts exct. I was wondering can I print this off and give it to her for something a little different to work on for her family?
If so, can you please tell me HOW to print it? Thank you I needed a project to work on while I sit here on my butt recovering from knee surgery!!! A new crochet project is certainly in order! I hope you enjoy this one. Since the pattern is pretty short, you could always copy and paste the text into Microsoft Word or something similar to print it out. I wish I could! I want to try these for my granddaughters. Do you use the size flip flop true to a persons shoe size seeing that your are going in a little from the edge of the actual edge.
Than j s for any help you can give me. Great question. Does that help? Hi there, I absolutely love this idea and I wondered if you could also adapt this pattern for knitting?
Feel free to subscribe in the white, pink and green box above this comment area to get notified once I make the video. If you could make a small video on how to get the yarn started on the slipper that would be awesome. Seeing it done first hand in a step by step video would be very helpful, maybe even post to You Tube or something? I clicked on the reference to the inexpensive hooks, but it showed a blank page. Where can I get info on the hooks you used?
Thanks for letting me know. Awesome shoes I use to crochet but lost my central vision 18 months ago Thinking might be difficult for me to make now Going to visit family miles one way and we will be doing it round trip at end of july Since I will be riding in car for would love these I love the color you chose Wish I could find these already made in pink and turqoise Is there anywhere that sells these all ready made?
If so do you know the cost? Thank you for your time, help and information Have a safe and fantastic week end. I do not have them already made but can get them out in days depending on how many orders I have in progress. I want a pair but I dont know howto crocheting… Will somebody make me a pair I will pay u I wear a size plot hank u.
Hi from New Zealand. Seem easy. May then get hubby to glue extra flip flop on bottom as I seem to end up outside in things like these.
Is there anyway that you could do a YouTube video of this. Us visual people are handicapped without seeing it done. Hi Jess! Love these and am working on a pair now! One question though, when you get to the slipper top it says: attach the yarn at the right marker.
When we sk 1 sc is that to the right or left of the right marker when the toe is facing you? I am thinking right otherwise when you continue you will be going backwards to the marker but wanted to check. Thanks so much! These are great! I have wide feet which is one of the reasons I love flip-flops: my big feet just hang over the edges!
Would I need to adjust the pattern at all, especially in the toe area? How do you think I should go about that?! These stretch a bit over time, especially if you use cotton yarn, so you might be able to use the pattern as is. You could also try just poking your holes slightly closer together like.
I think this would allow your feet a little extra wiggle room. All of your patterns are amazing. Will be doing flip flop slippers and cherry blossom plants this weekend. I showed the picture around the office and half a dozen folks want both of them! Thank you so much for the free patterns and wonderful pictures! Are these crocheted in the round or do you have to slip stitch to the first stitch and chain up for the next row?
Great question, Betsy. Crocheted in the round. No need to chain up, etc. I will add that note to the pattern. Thanks for asking a good question! I hope you enjoy the process.
I would be interested to see how the top part stretches as you walk, since it would be anchored differently by the sole than if the whole thing were crochet. Especially using cotton yarn. Which was good because I made it intentionally tight to begin with. One reader had a good suggestion to wash them if the cotton stretches to get it to shrink up again. Feel free to report back on your experiences too! Jess, you are a creative crochet genius. Thank you so much for sharing! If you fill the three holes on each sole where you removed the straps with a silicone caulk material the soles will be waterproof for outdoor wear.
Hi Jess, Love this pattern. Will defently be making these. Did I just miss it? Is 12 and 13 the same? Thanks for your great ideas. My mistake Nancy! Thanks for pointing it out. I like it a lot. I will have a go at it. Thank you so much for sharing your beautiful work.
Thank you so much for your kind words. How old were you when you learned? Does that make any sense? Perhaps this explanation combined with a look at some of the photos above will help. Let me know! I am having the same issue as Nancy. I am not sure what I am doing wrong. I have ripped it out 3 times now and still getting the same result. But I do have a question about the TOP of the the slipper.
Is it suppose to lay flat on the top of your foot? Mine keeps rounding upwards above the top of my foot. You might try using a slightly smaller hook if the top is bulging a little. I find the top part to be pretty forgiving once your foot is stretching it out a bit. Then, working up the right side of the first point, work both a half double crochet and a double crochet into the first stitch.
Work 4 double crochets into the space at the top of the petal, where you have a space from those extra chain stitches. This is the reverse of what we worked on the right side of the petal. First, work 2 double crochet into the next stitch.
Work a double crochet and half double crochet into the last stitch on the left side of the petal. Repeat Steps for Round 6, working around all 8 petal points. Fasten off, then weave in all the loose ends with a yarn needle or your crochet hook.

LOG IN. Search for:. I made a pair of these for my granddaugher who is 16 and tagged me in a post on FB. However after starting it and using the pattern without watching the videos, I struggled and decided to resort to the videos — anyway once I figured it out, it took little time to do the pair of them. Any suggestions? I worked really hard on them because I do think this is the type of pattern that benefits from some more detailed explanation. Great to read that you are releasing another boot pattern.
The yarn I have to use is 8 ply. Will look forward to seeing your new boot pattern and keep my fingers crossed that you have kids sizes in it. I have a hard time with the left boot. It is not coming out right. Can you also do the left boot. Is the hole gauge the same for your other patterns using flip flops?
I want to be able to print and keep the gauge if it is. These boots require holes that are spaced out further because the yarn we use is thicker. I am releasing a free boot pattern in a few weeks though with the same gauge so you could def reuse the guide for that. THANK you so much for the reaponse!! But first!! You can find the new Breckenridge Boots pattern here! I mean. The ruler in the printable pattern is very helpful because it allows you to poke the holes exactly an equal distance apart.
Do you do something to the sole to protect the yarn from being worn through when wearing them? I have frogged these three times, went down a hook size, and crocheted as tightly as possible even added in a few extra decreases but they are still so lumpy and huge!
Do you think the pattern would work well with a worsted weight yarn instead of the bulky? I imagine a worsted weight yarn would probably result in some pretty mesh-like boots.
You should be able to use the same holes you poked for the Cabin Boots as well as the same yarn. I am thinking about trying this with wedge heel flip flops, any suggestions for things to watch out for?
If ever you get a kit together I would be interested to purchase. I love that music you use in your ad as well. Thank you Tricia xx. Love the tune on your video, could you please advise me the name and artist. Loved this pattern, and was excited to get stared. That is so strange. Hi, I made these for my daughter and they turned out great, now my granddaughter wants a pair. She is 8 and wears a size.
Did you have a smaller pattern for kids yet or any ideas how to make them smaller. Would I use the same hole guide or space the farther apart and use smaller hooks, any ideas. I have purchased the directions but still get ads with the videos. How do I access the ad free videos? Thanks for purchasing the PDF. There is currently no option to watch the videos ad-free.
Running ads on the videos is the only way at the moment that I can cover the costs of my time to create them it takes hours to film and edit a tutorial like this. I run ads on them so that more people are able to use and benefit from them for free. Thanks for being here and for your understanding.
I just finished the right foot and changed it up a bit to fit my personal tastes. I added Concho instead of buttons and again posted to my blog, so go have a look see if you have time and Thanks again for such a great and fun pattern! The size of flip flop is misleading not even sure you are aware , but it will throw and frustrate some. I attempted these and came up with 56 holes.
This time my holes were the correct amount. The saving grace making the first pair was just adding 2 sc into some of the sc across the start row, evenly spacing to add 6 sc not the initial row with the worsted weight yarn. Well, at Old Navy anyway!
It IS really kind of silly! Hey there! When I started trying this pattern, my boots came out large and bulky and I had begun to get frustrated with the pattern. I just want to say thank you to everyone else who had this issue and Jess for giving tips to help. For me, the tension needed to be VERY tight in order to achieve the right size and shape.
Hope that helps others if they encounter the same issue. I find that working the stitches really tightly gives the shoes some good structure, but it definitely takes some getting used to.
Thank you for sharing your tip! Hi I have a question for you. Hey Jess, I just fall in love with your boots and — surprise surprise — i have a pair of flip Flops here waiting. But, I want to crochet them with DK yarn.
So is it necessary to change the number of stitches? I like to use a 4,5 mm hook. I hope you are so kind to answer my question, because i can not wait any longer for crocheting this cute boots… lol! The spacing of the holes on the soles is important to the gauge and yarn thickness though, so I would poke them closer together.
That might be one to try that would require less tweaking. What is the purpose using a shoe that is one size smaller? The reason I suggest using a smaller flip flop is simply because there is often more sole overhanging your toes on a flip flop than is necessary for an actually shoe.
They should be the same distance apart regardless of the size of shoes. The number of holes will change depending on the size though. Hi, I want to make a smaller size. Do you have a pattern for sizes ? Then, you might have to adjust how many rows you work in the top of the toe section before you start making the ankle.
Love you idea but do to not getting the tape measure for the pattern with the free pattern I will not be coming back to your site. The hole poking guide is not mandatory, just a helpful bonus. Your boots will still turn out well. We purchased your pattern, but it does not give the size differences for the stitches. But when we look at the pattern and began the video, it is written for the larger size of 64 holes.
What can we do? The county fair sounds fun! So while the flip flops will have different numbers of holes depending on the size a position, for example, on a any size flop flop will still be in the perfectly correct position for that size.
I hope that makes sense. Thank you so much for these! I used Buttercream Alpaca yarn in charcoal and a fibishibg needle instead of the B hook at the beginning, and they are fantastic!! Good day, how can I have the tutorial videos made available to watch Offline as I do not have Internet or Wi-Fi access at home where I will be crocheting the boots.
If I can download the videos and watch them offline it will help me a lot. This is my first time trying to crochet these fit flop boots. I do have the pattern but being able to go on the videos and fwd and rewind on them as I need to follow the steps will help me a lot!
I am self taught and struggle along by watching Youtube — but have made some lovely things. I have asked for help but nobody can help me. I live in a little town in East London, South Africa. A friend wants me to try make her the boots that are on your site — I have tried to copy and paste the photo but am unable to do it…I only have the ref number set out here under.
Its the boots with the 5 buttons down the back. Were you able to see the video tutorial within this post right above the pattern? That should help you quite a bit. I have loved using your patterns for flip flop shoes. Every member of my family has a pair. I get huge comments everywhere I go. So question… people want to buy slippers from me.
How do I go about giving your pattern credit as I do this? So getting paid is enticing and exciting. But I would never claim the pattern as my own and I want to give u credit. Let me know what the best way I can do that. I would love for that to happen for you! Such cute boots, I have a bunch of dark purple wool that is just begging to be made into these slippers!
I really like the flip flops into shoes concept, thank you for all of your lovely designs! I have made 2 pairs of the cabin boots and the toe area puffs up so much, it makes them to big and loose. What am i doing wrong. Please help. Would you want to check out the Breckenridge Boot pattern? Where are you flip flops from? You might also like to read this FAQs post for more details on poking holes.
Hello Jess!! I love your work, but I have one question. Does it matter the type of yarn you use? Does it have to be chunky yarn or any size yarn will do? It def matters what type of yarn you use because the yarn thickness will influence the gauge the tightness of the stitches.
Hi Jess and Thanks for making this pattern available for such a reasonable cost AND for the video to help me follow along. Ive had the yarn for a couple of weeks now. Is that an issue? I want to make these for my family for Christmas and have GOT to get going on these.
Ugh Im such a worry bug! I wear them around the house as slippers and they sole is just starting to flatten a bit as flip flops do. The strands of yarn are still holding sturdy though. You can read a little more about how they hold up here too. I just found and watched your cabin boot tutorials. Your video instructions are so clear and easy to follow, you definitely have a wonderful way of explaining everything.
I will let you know how it goes. I am your newest fan! Oh, My!!!! I just discovered your blog! Love , love, love!!! Take care Vicki. So wonderful to see someone who went to CU! This year has been warm enough for even the sane people to wear flip flops, but I think these boots are way comfier! I know others have also cut a lining out of sheepskin or fleece. I wonder if something like the sole of the Sierra Slippers might be a good starting point for a crocheted insert?
Hi I hate to say this since lots of others are having such fun with their boots. I tried and tried to decipher the instructions but nothing worked.
Will you please rewrite the instructions for me to see if that helps? Several friends tried to help but could not understand the way it was written. Belleville, On. I wish we could just sit on the couch and I could show you step-by-step, but vid tutorials are the next best thing in this day in age. First off I want to thank you for making the video tutorials to go along with the pattern, that has helped me so much. Sometimes just seeing someone else do it really helps get past that mental block I develop all too often.
I am struggling with the toe part of the boot, it is coming out really poofy, not at all flat like yours does and that you describe that it should. I have taken the stitches out, used a smaller hook and even decreased more times than you recommend and the result is the same.
I have measured everything and my gauges are right, I am confused and frustrated. I really want to make these for my daughter — but continue to fail. I know how frustrating that feels. Thank you for the super quick response! Can I use this pattern for the foot part of the boot then switch over to the Cabin Boot Pattern?
If so where would I switch over? I think I may have found the problem as I tried the other pattern that you referred to and the same thing is happening. I am using a pair of size 5 womens flip flops and the toe is HUGE and shaped like a bubble instead of flat and tapered like what your pictures and videos show. Could it be the size of flip flop that is causing this issue? Do I need to add more decreases?
It seems a couple of the other ladies were having the same problem. What a neat idea! Save my name, email, and website in this browser for the next time I comment.
